Dutch couple, Carlo Houben and Marjon Van Hoof opened their rare gem shop, Treasure
Stones, in Paihia shopping mall late last year. It was perfect timing to capture the influx of
tourists who flock to Paihia every summer. The shop is the culmination of a longstanding
dream for Carlo whose hobby was gem cutting and also for Marjon with her flair for making
necklaces and earrings from the gems. They believe that Paihia is the perfect spot for them, not
only in a business sense, but for family life with their two children and they have fallen in love
with the people and the weather. The pair started off their Kiwi lifestyle experience in Kaikoura.
They originally intended to open their gem store in Kaikoura, but the lack of suitable premises
drove them north where they found the ideal spot.
Marjon's father supplied their very first ruby goodletite, an extremely rare gem found only in
the Westland area and New Zealand's only precious stone. The first goodletite was found near
Hokitika by gold miners in the 1890s and features numerous colours through its combination of
ruby, sapphire and tourmaline crystals embedded in green fuchsite. Treasure Stones is only the
second outlet to sell ruby goodletite which is set in sterling silverjewellery. The first shopstarted
about 20 years ago in Hokitika under the name "Ruby Rock". The shop also sells jewellery with
ammolite, another rare and valuable opal-like organic gemstone. This colorful gem is formed
from an ancient marine fossil and found in Canada. Still another special gem is ruby zoisite: a
combination of pink/red ruby and green zoisite crystals in a single specimen. So take a look at
their website w w w.treasurestones.co.nz for a treasure trove of gift ideas.
Having worked in the kiwifruit industry and owned his own dairy farm in Ohaeawai,
Dave Hull knows from experience how variable weather patterns can wreck havoc on
productivity and how critical it is to have a reliable water source.
So when he and his wife Michelle sold the farm in 2009, and with 25 years building experience
under his belt, the ever versatile Dave spent some time training with industry specialists before
purchasing a rig and starting his new venture Monsoon Welldrilling.
Monsoon Welldrilling can drill down to, and through, basalt rock. The water found in basalt can
be up to seventy years old and, because of the naturally occurring filtration process, is usually
excellent quality drinking water.
The water is drawn to the surface through 104mm I/D PVC pipes which can utilise
4 inch submersible pumps.
The team at Monsoon Welldrilling pride themselves on excellent service and if they don't
find water there's no charge. Michelle is happy to manage the Resource Consent process and
can assist with pump and electrical requirements. Dave can install water bores anywhere in
the Far North and as a local, it's all familiar territory to him. For more information call 0508
