FARMERS' MARKET HERE TO STAY
Last Sunday, at a well attended meeting of the Bay of Islands Food
Group to clarify operational issues, it was confirmed that the
Market Manager s contract had not been terminated and her
position description was to be re-defined.
The Executive Committee are currently working on redrafting the
contract and establishing a position description for this role. The
role of Market Manager is a contract position and, to ensure the
needs of the market are met, it is customary to review the contract
on an annual basis.
As an Incorporated Society, the Market like all organisations, is
required to have rules and policies which have been mutually
agreed to by the majority of members and the committee.
To ensure product diversity, restrictions apply regarding the
number of stallholders offering the same product. The policies
governing these restrictions are reviewed every year at the AGM
and can only be changed if the majority is in agreement.
The Bay of Islands Food group understand that the customer has
many choices from supermarkets, dairies, home stalls, roadside
stalls, fruit & vegetable shops, plant stores and cafes.
Farmers Markets, however, are unique as they sell direct to the
public and offer very fresh produce and products locally grown or
processed by the stallholders, who enjoy meeting and chatting to
their customers about the value and the range of their products.
The Bay of Islands Food Group operates two weekly Markets.
Paihia on the village green every Thursday 2.00pm 6.30pm
and Kerikeri in the Hobson Street carpark every Sunday
The group are keen to offer a greater range of products for their
growing customer base and invite any interested parties to contact
the Executive Committee to discuss their idea or product item.
The Executive Committee also welcomes your feedback on how
your local Market could be improved.
Call Marion Wooster, Chair of the Executive Committee,
on 09 4018807, RD2, Okaihau, Northland
