Show you love your love
Valentine's Day is to remind ourselves
how much special people in our lives
mean, especially a romantic partner
like a spouse or long-term mate.
It's an event which has its origins in
the ancient past but, like most
festivities, has been influenced and
altered by later developments.
Valentine's Day is thought to have
started as a pagan fertility festival
before it was co-opted by the Catholic
church as a day to honour St Valen-
It is not clear exactly which St Val-
entine it is named after because there
were a number of early Christian
martyrs called Valentine.
However, up until the Middle Ages
no romantic traditions were associated
with Valentine's Day. With the advent
of royal courts, the idea of courtly love
developed and the Christian festival
was linked to love and romance.
In 1381, the poet and writer Chau-
cer wrote a poem to acknowledge the
first anniversary of the engagement of
England's King Richard II and Anne of
Bohemia. He connected the event to
the mating of birds and the Christian
feast of St Valentine's Day and started
something bigger than he ever
As time went on, traditions like
exchanging tokens of love were
increasingly established on Valentine's
Day. The feast day of St Valentine on
February 14 was removed from the
Catholic Calendar of Saints in 1969,
but the celebration of love continues.
The Greeting Card Association says
one billion Valentine cards are sent
each year with most -- around 85
percent -- bought by women.
Roses are the traditional way to
show your love because the symbolic
meaning of the rose is love and remem-
brance. Red roses are for passion,
white for purity, pink for happiness
and yellow supposedly for infidelity. So
it might not be a good idea to send
