They are escorting Maori soprano Ramonda Taleni, who sang at the Kerikeri opening of the Domain Booth sculpture, and Chris Booth as he delivers a symbol of the sculpture to Cadigal elder Allen Madden and other dignitaries. Kiwi artist creates work for Sydney site The complete work: Sandstone wave and woven quartz forms. Sydney's biggest land- mark sculpture, at the Royal Botanic Garden, was launched last month by New South Wales Governor Professor Marie Bashir. The creator is sculptor and internationally acclaimed artist Chris Booth of Kerikeri. Chris used a pattern from a rare Aboriginal shield, the Sydney Shield, after gaining per- mission from Allen Mad- den on behalf of the Cadigal people. This pattern, to me, is the heart of the sculp- ture -- the flower. In allowing the use of this extremely beautiful and important design, the sculpture becomes a bi- cultural statement, of great relevance to the site and place,'' Mr Booth said at the opening. It was and is a place of significance to Cadigal/Eora from long before and following the first contact period with Europeans. I've created the sculp- ture to reflect a holistic, genuine respect for nature; our atmosphere, ocean, earth, our society and all living things -- more vital to our sur- vival today than it ever was in past societies.'' Unlike most sculp- tures, this one is an evolving piece of art where native flora and fauna will make it their home, while it pays respect to the original custodians of the land, the Cadigal people, Royal Botanic Garden executive director Tim Entwisle says. Visitors' hearts and minds will be captivated by the Johnson Estate Sculpture as it changes with nature over time, while it strongly ident- ifies with our Aboriginal heritage,'' he says. The sculpture consists of two parts, one built from 16,000 threaded quartz pebbles, the other from local sandstone. The wave-like sand- stone form appears to emerge from the bedrock below Government House to cascade down the lawn towards Sydney Harbour. Art Gallery of New South Wales director Edmund Capon says the selection of inter- nationally acclaimed Kiwi artist Booth to cre- ate the sculpture was perfect for the site. 21 BAY CHRONICLE, APRIL 7, 2011 NEWS
